GETTING YOUR CAR READY FOR WINTER

Winter is heading our way and it’s important that we take the time to get our cars ready for the colder months just like we do with our homes and our closets. We definitely want to do what it takes to keep our vehicles prepared for nasty weather so that they are in optimal condition to keep us, our passengers, and others on the roads of Etna Green safe.

There are many ways we can get our vehicle ready and be prepared ahead of the weather changes. Here are some ways you can get your vehicle ready for winter. Tires should always be at the top of the list of priorities when it comes to safety, especially in summer and winter due to the extreme temperatures.

Start with checking your tires for excessive wear. If they are really worn down or damaged, they’re not going to help you when the roads are slippery or covered in ice or snow. Never risk going into winter with old worn out tires.

Even if you aren’t ready for new tires, consider purchasing a set of winter tires. When you change out your regular tires for winter ones, it really helps to ensure your safety and smooth driving in the scary winter conditions. It will also preserve your all-season tires for when we head back into warmer months! Regardless of the season of your tires and if they are in good condition, then a very simple yet very overlooked check is your tire pressure. You’ll want to make sure they are properly inflated because that will help you properly grip the road and help out with fuel efficiency.

Now that your tires are ready for winter, the next thing to address are your brakes. This is just as important as making sure your tires are ready for the winter months. Typically speaking, during the winter your brakes work overtime due to the slower moving traffic conditions. Getting your brakes checked before the worst of the winter weather sets should also be at the top of your list for winterizing your vehicle.

Don’t forget your windshield wiper blades! Visibility is already compromised during our bad-weather months, but without properly working blades, you’re putting yourself at unnecessary risk! Considering how much work they do for you, this is a relatively easy and inexpensive way to stay ahead of the weather.

Another very important item that needs to be on your list of items to take care of before winter hits is your vehicle’s coolant/antifreeze system. Simply checking your coolant levels is not enough because coolant/antifreeze contains other fluids that can, over time, stop working at their optimum levels to keep the water in your vehicle’s radiator from freezing or corroding. Never use straight water as antifreeze or we’ll be picking you up from the side of the road!
